Dari kekerabatan burung, family Columbidae merupakan salah satu kelompok besar, yang beranggotakan species merpati, punai, tekukur, unchal, dan perkutut – dengan begitu banyak sebutan dalam bahasa lokal. Jumlah anggota Columbidae sekarang yang telah tercatat oleh para ahli adalah 46 marga (genera, genus) dan sebanyak 318 species. Sebanyak 304 species dinyatakan masih hidup (extant), dan 14 species dinyatakan punah (extinct). Di Indonesia, terdapat sekitar 90 species. Jumlah species dalam Columbidae, berdasarkan marga, adalah sebagai berikut:

Dimasukkannya tambahan referensi yang menginformasikan gambaran umum anggota Colum-bidae, yang merupakan species liar, dilakukan dengan pertimbangan bahwa kelompok fancy pigeons juga merupakan anggota dari Columbidae, sehingga saya menilai perlu adanya referensi pembanding. Saya rencanakan tambahan informasi untuk perbandingan ini sekitar 300 species, atau semua species yang ada, sepanjang datanya telah terekam dalam Kumpulan Kliping Hare. Beberapa species ini sudah secara resmi dinyatakan punah, dan karena itu tidak ditampilkan di dalam blog ini.
Acuan utama untuk pengembangan referensi, saya gunakan data dari International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), BirdLife International, International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP), ARKive, dan beberapa referensi spesifik lainnya.
